MIXED DRINKS/EMOTIONS

My friend LA who I have mentioned here an there in a few posts, is leaving Chicago. This makes me sad, but at the same time I am very happy for him since he's leaving for a good reason, which is that he's going back to his hometown in Louisiana to get hitched.

LA and I met one cold November night at a bar by the name of Shuba's. I was the first person he ever met after he arrived in Chicago (as he likes to tell others). I was innocently sitting at the bar one night, reading the Chicago Reader when the guy next to me asked to use the ashtray. LA had a thick Southern accent and explained how he had escaped the Southern Delta after Katrina made her name known.

He came to Chicago to begin his life anew and after a few drinks we realized that he lived around the corner from me. That first night we hung out I drove him home and we've been tight friends ever since. I distinctly remember him coming over to watch the NFL playoff games, and he was named the MVP (Most Valuable Person) by the majority of my brother's friends after bringing him to a certain Super Bowl party.

Tonight I met him at the restaurant he works at and had a drink and met several of his co-workers that like him as much as I do. After he finished his shift we went across the street and got hammered on beer and whiskey. When I dropped him off at his place I awkwardly hugged him off.

I hate goodbyes and this one was no exception. I am very happy that he has found a solid woman and wish him the best - but at the same time I'll miss his general brilliance, not to mention his conversation skills. It kinda sucks for me, though I'm sooooooooooo happy for him.

For what its worth I know how you feel, I had to say goodbye to 2 very close mates of mine recently and it sucked bigtime.

Can't claim it's gotten better yet.
